The future of public debt: prospects and implications
Since the start of the financial crisis, industrial country public debt levels have increased dramatically. And they are set to continue rising for the foreseeable future. A number of countries face the prospect of large and rising future costs related to the ageing of their populations. In this paper, the authors examine what current fiscal policy and expected future age-related spending imply for the path of debt/GDP ratios over the next several decades. Their projections of public debt ratios lead them to conclude that the path pursued by fiscal authorities in a number of industrial countries is unsustainable. Drastic measures are necessary to check the rapid growth of current and future liabilities of governments and reduce their adverse consequences for long-term growth and monetary stability.

L’inégalité de revenus est de plus en plus forte en Belgique
En 10 ans, de 1997 à 2007, l’inégalité de revenus avant impôts a augmenté de 16% et de 22% pour l’inégalité après impôts. L’inégalité de revenus est la plus faible en Flandre et la plus forte dans la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale. C’est ce que montre le coefficient Gini, calculé sur base des revenus fiscaux.
Le coefficient Gini mesure l’inégalité de revenus. Si la répartition des revenus est tout à fait égale, le coefficient de Gini est de zéro (tout le monde dispose des mêmes revenus). Par contre, si la répartition des revenus est tout à fait inégale, le coefficient de Gini s’élève à 1 (une personne dispose de l’ensemble des revenus). Plus le coefficient de Gini est bas, meilleure est la répartition des revenus.

The Limits to Limits: Is a cap on immigration a viable policy for the UK?
As we approach a general election, all three main parties are keen to emphasise that they would be tough on immigration. The Liberal Democrats talk about a ‘firm but fair system’, Labour emphasises its ‘tough but flexible’ Australian-style Points-Based System. But the Conservatives have gone a step further and have made a cap on immigration a headline policy. Although they have not set out the level at which such a cap might be set, they have talked about reducing annual net immigration below 100,000, and have also intimated their support for calls for annual net immigration to be reduced to around 40,000.

In ons flashbericht van vorige week werd vermeld dat onderwijs een specialiteit is van Vlaanderen, hiermee refererend aan de goede PISA-scores die onze regio meestal neerzet. Deze specialiteit gaat evenwel grotendeels verloren aan de allochtonen. Zij blijven aan de staart van ons onderwijssysteem bengelen, met alle gevolgen vandien voor hun kansen op de arbeidsmarkt. De (veel te kleine) intredekans van de Vlaamse 50-plusser
Het opkrikken van de werkzaamheidsgraad van 50-plussers blijft een topprioriteit. Twee belangrijke hefbomen zijn het verlengen van de actieve loopbaan en het versterken van de instroom van werkloze of inactieve 50-plussers. De cijfers over instroom van 50-plussers op de Vlaamse arbeidsmarkt tonen aan dat er van de tweede hefboom een veel te zwak effect uitgaat. Deze en andere belangrijke conclusies zijn terug te vinden in de Boordtabel Eindeloopbaan, ontwikkeld door het Steunpunt WSE. De Boordtabel is een meetinstrument dat toelaat om voor het Vlaams Gewest de realisaties inzake instroombevordering en uitstroombeperking op te volgen (Sels et al., 2010)1.

Het ontslagrecht is vermoedelijk de moeilijkst te nemen hindernis op de weg naar een eenheidsstatuut. Vanuit een internationaal perspectief zijn arbeiders in dit land slecht beschermd, bedienden zeer goed. De vakbonden willen het sociale beschermingsniveau van arbeiders optrekken tot het niveau van de bedienden. De industriële werkgeversfederaties zien dat uiteraard helemaal niet zitten.
